During the early 1200s Hugh was associated with Walter FitzAlan and Maldoven, Earl of Lennox. In later life he served as a juror at an inquest held by Walter's great-grandson, Walter Stewart, Earl of Menteith. He witnessed at least seven charters that reveal him to be a son of Simon, grandson of Bertulf and brother of Simon of Lectehtwerling.

He was gifted Dalnottar and Balmore in Dunbartonshire by Earl Maldoven between 1225 and 1235, the charter being witnessed by his father Simon. In 1274 he was summoned by the archdeacon of Dunblane to attend the King at Dumbarton to prove his ownership of Dalnotter.

His children likely included Patrick, Walter and Duncan Fleming and through them he is the probable progenitor of the Flemings of Barochan and Biggar.
